When I lived at the rear of 768 High St Thornbury, I would tram back from Bundoora and try to keep my pinball habit alive on the tables at the front of Thornbury Espresso – I was a suspicious character to all of those playing cards at the adjacent round tables.
These images are beyond any categorisation by quality – – as Minor White would say:”for technical
information the camera was faithfully used” – -and so it as these objects you make come into being – documents and art = thanks David this work will be of value as long as there is humanity in this country.
If you are ever in Ballarat, there is a wonderful hairdressers called Antonio’s Le Hair with photos of old Hollywood movie stars In the window which have been there for as long as I can remember. The main one features Marilyn Monroe and is surrounded by lightbulbs like the old theatre dressing room mirrors.
Wonderful work David. Good to see my favorite table at Sila – looking forward to sitting at once lockdown ends. Did you ever get to photograph the Boomerang Italian Sports Cafe in Nicholson Street Nth Carlton. I photographed its interior in 1995 shortly before its closure. It had a unique glass sugar container / dispenser which ran the length of the counter on a rail. I will have to get around sometime soon to post my cafe interior shots from the 1990s.
I just about teared up at the sight of Golden Tower. What an iconic licensed 24 hour cafe! I don’t think many if any of those exist anymore? It welcomed me in in all states with an ever changing cast of characters in tow, always happy to sling you a beer (or an “adult milkshake”) at whatever ungodly hour you found yourself huddled in a booth there. Melbourne’s own Bar Italia as sung about in the Pulp song of the same name.
